At the Dr Tanja Phillips Medical Aesthetic Clinic in Basingstoke, we have seen a significant rise in patients looking into laser thread vein removal treatments in the Hampshire area, especially as the warmer months draw closer and we begin to dust off our summer clothes!
Unlike varicose veins, thread veins are seen as a cosmetic imperfection and rarely lead to any serious medical implications. They are thinner, smaller and not likely to cause pain or discomfort.
What are thread veins?
Thread veins are one of the many types of vascular lesions that can appear on our bodies, sometimes from birth but more commonly as we age. Thread veins occur when small capillaries in the skin become dilated, giving the appearance of red spots, or sometimes larger lesions. Thread veins can occur anywhere on the body but are moe likely to be found on the face and legs. They can also spread out and form a web-like lesion, which is why they are often referred to as spider veins.
Why might I want my thread veins removed?
For many, thread veins are not a cause for concern and can be left untreated. However more extreme cases can have a significant impact on ones self esteem and therefore laser thread vein removal is required.
What causes thread veins to appear?
A number of factors can lead to the development of thread veins. Genetics play a huge part in whether or not a person is likely to suffer from them. Looking back through the generations should give a strong indication of what’s to come!
Some women find that thread veins appear during pregnancy due to the bodies increased blood volume, as well as fluctuating hormone levels. Also, prolonged exposure to the sun and/or cold weather conditions can play a part in thread vein development.
Other factors that can be linked to developing thread veins include:
- Prolonged standing/sitting
- Smoking
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Poor diet
- Lack of exercise
- Poor circulation
How does laser thread vein removal work & what might I expect after treatment?
The blood in the capillaries absorbs the energy emitted by the Fotona laser, which then collapses and immediately shrinks it. The body will then effectively clear away the tissue. Patients can often see immediate results with smaller lesions whereas larger lesions may require additional sessions to completely disappear. The treatment requires no down-time and causes very little discomfort to the patient. Some inflammation may occur over the treatment sight, but this is quick to settle.
