Acne is a skin condition that can affect people at any stage of life, however it is more common in teenagers and young adults between the ages of 11-30. It is often linked to hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy and later menopause, but can also be triggered by other factors such as:
- Cosmetic products (particularly those which are not non-comedogenic)
- Smoking
- Certain medications
Genetics also play a part, as acne often runs in families, and more women than men will suffer from the condition.
Symptoms of acne
Acne occurs when the sebaceous glands (which are found near the surface of the skin, attached to the hair follicle) produce too much sebum and when mixed with dead skin cells, plug/block the follicle.
People with acne can present mild, moderate or severe symptoms, in areas such as the face, back and chest.
Symptoms include:
- Oily skin
- Enlarged open pores
- Red skin that may be uncomfortable to touch
- Blackheads/whiteheads
- Papules/pustules (spots)
- Cysts (severe spots similar to boils)
